Visa and Permit for Bhutan Travel
Bhutan is a unique destination with regulated tourism, ensuring the preservation of its culture, environment, and heritage. All international visitors (except citizens from India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives) require a visa to enter Bhutan, along with a permit to travel within the country.
Who Needs a Visa?
- Visitors from most countries must obtain a visa in advance through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator or travel agent.
- Citizens of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives do not require a visa, but they must carry valid ID or passport for entry.
Visa Application Process
- Book a Tour with a Licensed Operator: Only licensed operators can apply for visas on your behalf.
- Submit Required Documents: Typically, a scanned passport copy and recent passport size photo copy.
- Visa Clearance: The Tourism Council of Bhutan approves your application.
- Receive Visa Clearance Letter: This must be presented at the airport upon arrival.
Note: Visas are usually issued electronically; the physical visa stamp is placed in your passport upon arrival in Bhutan.
Visa Fee
- A non-refundable visa fee of USD 40 per person is charged.
- This fee is usually included in your tour package and paid via your licensed tour operator.
Special Permits for Travel
Depending on your itinerary, additional permits may be required
- Trekking Permits: Required for high-altitude treks such as the Snowman Trek or Jomolhari Trek.
Processing Time
- Visa processing typically takes 3–5 working days once the travel operator submits your documents.
- Permits are usually issued along with your visa but may take extra time for remote areas.
Important Tips
- Always carry a copy of your passport and visa clearance letter while traveling.
- Do not attempt to enter Bhutan without a visa if required — you will be denied entry.
- Book your tour and visa well in advance, especially during peak seasons like spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November).
